Should I File a Provisional Patent Application?
It depends on your circumstances whether or not you should first file a provisional patent application before filing a utility patent application. A provisional patent application might be a good option if you are still making fairly significant changes to the invention. It is also a good way to lower your upfront patent costs while you test the market for your new invention.
If you are already selling your invention or if it is a priority to get an issued patent as soon as possible, then it may be best for you to skip the provisional application and file a utility application right away.
